Minority Involvement in Manufacturing Engineering

The Minority Involvement in Manufacturing Engineering project, or MIME, is leveraging the DII@FSE teaching and research resources to enhance diversity within the manufacturing program at The Polytechnic’s School.

Students of MIME have participated in the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative, or FURI, the Master’s Opportunity for Research in Engineering program, or MORE, The Polytechnic School’s e-Projects programs and trained students from underrepresented groups. In 2020, they recruited three women and one Hispanic student to engage in research in Assistant Professor of engineering Kenan Song’s Advanced Materials Advanced Manufacturing Lab, or AMAML.

Song has also served as a Science and Engineering Experience mentor and is training three students from Scottsdale BASIS charter school, each from underrepresented groups.

Efforts made in AMAML are an expansion of learning and training opportunities to students across the manufacturing engineering program at large. Song expects the collaboration among manufacturing faculty and staff to enhance this project’s impact in educational equity and inclusion.
