Admission requirements for many engineering majors are higher than ASU’s general admission standards.

Fulton Schools degree programs admissions criteria fall into two categories:

Degrees that require more than minimum ASU requirements

The following degrees have admission criteria which are more than the ASU minimum. The criteria for first-year students seeking these degrees have two requirements:

Requirement 1
  • Minimum 1210 SAT combined evidence-based reading and writing plus math score (or 1140 if taken prior to March 5, 2016) or minimum 24 ACT combined score; or
  • 3.00 minimum ABOR GPA*; or
  • class ranking in top 25 percent of high school class, and

*ABOR GPA is a calculation of the GPA you earned in only the 16 high school course competencies required for admission to ASU.

All students are required to meet general university admission requirements for transfer students.

Transfer student (24+ credits post high school)

Students who have completed 24 or more transferable college credits post-high school may satisfy admission requirements by meeting the Primary Criteria OR the Secondary Criteria, not both.

What is the difference between the Primary Criteria and the Secondary Criteria?
  • Primary Criteria are based on your transfer GPA and your high school math and science classes.
  • Secondary Criteria are based on your transfer GPA and your GPA in specific, critical degree courses.
Do all degree programs have Primary Criteria and Secondary Criteria?

No. Some degree programs have only one set of criteria or require the minimum ASU admission requirements.

  2. Students applying to this program must have completed an Associate of Applied Science degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Additional admission requirements and information

Professional licensure

ASU offers programs that lead to professional licensure with the state of Arizona and may allow graduates to be eligible for licensure in other states.

Students should check the professional licensure list for the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering to determine if this program meets requirements in their state.

Students should note that not all programs within the Fulton Schools of Engineering lead to professional licensure.

English Language Proficiency requirement

English language test options

​Success at ASU begins with a strong comprehension of the English language. Because our rigorous courses are taught in English and move at a fast pace, fluency in the language is necessary for understanding concepts and expressing yourself effectively.

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or a citizen of a country listed on the ASU English Speaking Country list must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting test scores.

Admission to all Fulton Schools degree programs except those in the Polytechnic School and School of Manufacturing and System Networks require one of the following:

  • a minimum TOEFL score of 79 on the iBT (internet-based test); or
  • a minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5; or
  • a Pearson Test of English PTE score of 58; or
  • a Duolingo English Test score of 105.

For admission into programs within the Polytechnic School and the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, the general University English proficiency requirements must be met. Conditional admission

ASU may offer conditional undergraduate admission to international applicants who meet the academic (aptitude) requirement but who are not proficient in English.

Through conditional admission, students must first successfully complete the Advanced 2 level of the English language course at ASU’s American English and Culture Program or demonstrate English proficiency as stated above before being allowed to enroll in university courses.

Note: ASU reserves the right to independently test any student’s English proficiency upon arrival, including those who have met the English proficiency requirement, and may require support classes if the demonstrated level of English proficiency is not sufficient for academic success.

Change of major

Students interested in changing their major to one of the majors within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering must meet the admission requirements. Note that the GPA requirement for change of major is calculated using all coursework (ASU + transfer GPA). A useful tool to view the combined ASU+transfer GPA and the courses required to be completed in order to meet the secondary criteria requirements is the FSE Secondary Review Audit in DARS. Please review the Admission Requirements above for a complete list of degree programs that have secondary review criteria.

Students who were admitted as freshmen into the Fulton Schools of Engineering, with the exception of the Polytechnic School and the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks​, and have maintained continuous enrollment in any Fulton Schools major may choose to change to any other major within the Fulton Schools of Engineering provided they are in good academic standing.

Students admitted to the Polytechnic School and the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks must meet the transfer admission requirements in order to change to a Fulton Engineering major outside of the Polytechnic School and the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks.

Transfer students who have been admitted to the Fulton Schools of Engineering from a non-ASU institution or are changing majors from another college within ASU must meet the transfer admission requirements in order to change to any other major within the Fulton Schools of Engineering.

Change of major is not guaranteed, and students interested in changing majors can learn more about the process at changingmajors.asu.edu/.
