First Year 1st Semester Pathways

Tips for engineering first-year undergraduate students

• Concentrate on adjusting to college. Make friends, learn how to navigate campus, how to get things done, and time management skills to balance school, work and downtime. Know your ASU 101, FSE 100 instructors and academic advisors.
• Develop good study skills and doing well in your courses. A strong GPA creates the foundation need for more advanced coursework and your future internships and jobs.  Did you know that ASU has FREE tutoring available? A lot of engineering students go to tutoring. Ask your academic advisor for more information.
• Learn how to find and use resources of the university and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering—take advantage of the total Fulton experience. (FSE 100 and academic advisors)
• Read emails and electronic announcements from your academic advisor, program unit, school and career center—don’t let a good opportunity pass you by.
• Check out StayWithIt for survival tips and more
• Explore clubs and organizations on campus and join one that interests you. These groups provide countless opportunities to develop the skills and accomplishments that will strengthen your resume—and you’ll have fun.
• Use your dedicated Fulton Schools Career Center and ASU’s Career Services, as well as find company visits and internship postings on Handshake.
• Seek out opportunities through student organizations, academic coursework or study abroad that help you get prepared for a global workplace.
• Read  websites and other business publications to increase your industry knowledge. Employers expect engineers to have a solid understanding of basic business concepts and the earlier you start, the easier it is.
