The following documents are utilized to facilitate registration for the mandatory undergraduate, and non-mandatory graduate, internships related to the construction management programs at Arizona State University.  If you are in construction engineering, please use the CNE course page.

The CON 296 and CON 484 Internships are degree requirements for undergraduate students in construction management & technology.  Timing of the internship is structured for summer session (see your Major Map in MyASU).  Course registration is required as well as course payment.  The internship experience (320 work-hours) for each internship must be in the semester in which you are registered.  Students pursuing an unpaid internship, outside of ASU, will need to check to see if there is an Unpaid Student Placement Agreement (SPA) is on file.  If not, an SPA will be needed in addition to the DocuSign submission.

CON 296, Summer Internship 1 – Construction Management & Technology, Summer 2024

CON 296 Summer Field Internship (summer field internship is the official course name) is the first of two mandatory internships for the construction management degree.  This internship has 320 work-hours that must be completed in the same semester in which the course agreement is signed.  The pre-requisite is the OSHA 30 within CON 271 Safety.

1. CON 296 Course Policy, Pre-requisite and Procedures: CON 296 (PDF).  This is the document that explains the construct of the course, the OSHA 30 pre-requisite and the procedures needed to be approved to register. 
2. Course Agreement and Application Packet: Adobe Sign Summer 2024 (ASU authentication required). Fill out the agreement to receive course registration approval.  This agreement is only applicable for summer 2024 registration.
   • Do not print a copy. Fill out the agreement via Adobe Sign agreement for course approval.
   • Fill out the Adobe Sign agreement so that it can be automatically routed to your employer, internship coordinator, and academic advisor.  Upon approval, you will be given a course registration override.  Course ID number is included on the override page of the Adobe Sign agreement.
   • Have your offer letter or offer email ready to upload as part of the agreement submission.
   • Be prepared to submit a copy of your OSHA 30 card or a letter/email from your instructor to verify completion of the 30 hour training.

3. Course Syllabus:

• A session (PDF) – First six week session Summer 2024
• DYN session (PDF) – Full semester Summer 2024.

CON 484, Summer Internship 2 – Construction Management & Technology, Summer 2024

CON 484 is the second internship for Construction Management & Technology students as part of the undergraduate curricular requirement.  This internship focuses on advancing skills established in CON 296.  The pre-requisite is the completion of CON 296 with a C grade or better.

1. CON 484 Course Policy, Pre-requisite and Procedures: CON 484 (PDF).  This document provides more detail about the CON 484 course and the framework for course registration approval.
2. Course Agreement: Adobe Sign Summer 2024 (ASU authentication required). This link provides access to the ASU Adobe Sign platform which is used to facilitate the course registration approval process.  This agreement needs to be completed within Adobe Sign.

 Course Syllabus:

• A session (PDF) – Used for students seeking A session degree conferral.  This is accelerated to complete by June 26, 2024. This is the first six weeks of the summer semester.
• B session (PDF) – Second six week session (June 27, 2024 to August 9, 2024)
• DYN session (PDF) – Full summer (June 12, 2024 to August 2, 2024)

CON 584 – Graduate Internship – Construction Management & Technology –  Summer 2024

CON 584 is a graduate-level internship for construction management students seeking to qualify for CPT. Please note, the CON 584 internship is not part of the Master’s or Ph.D. degree requirement and is considered an additional credit. CON 584 registration is an additional credit unless otherwise approved by for a PhD based on Chair approval.

Course Agreement: 

• If you are negotiating for summer 2024 be sure to read through this helpful guide to when you can work and timing for registration for the course and CPT – PDF. 

• Adobe Sign Summer 2024 (requires ASU authentication). This is the agreement you fill out to start the course registration approval process.

Review the SSEBE CPT Policy document at the bottom of this page. Some students rush into the agreement and don’t understand the framework for the course and CPT.  They are different and there are multiple steps involved.

Be prepared to submit a copy of your approved IPOS as part of the internship agreement process. Use a screenshot image from your MyASU page indicating approval.

F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of off-campus employment authorization for F-1 visa students. If you have an internship offer or you are thinking about completing an internship during your program at ASU please use this page as a guide. To be eligible for CPT you must have maintained F-1 status for a minimum of one academic year (two consecutive semesters) and meet all eligibility requirements. For eligibility requirements read through the SSEBE CPT Internship Guide for your program and the ISSC website.

If you are utilizing the internship to qualify for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) through ISSC you will be responsible for familiarizing yourself with ISSC CPT requirements and facilitating the paperwork.  Documentation about the

Renege – (verb) To go back on a promise, undertaking, or contract.  Students should never accept a job with the intention of turning it down if “something better” comes along. Not only is it inconsiderate and unprofessional, but it also reflects poorly on Arizona State University and might negatively impact future ASU student opportunities with that employer. Also, employers communicate with each other and you will likely damage your reputation.

After you have given your decision careful consideration and accepted an offer, stop looking. Inform other employers who have extended offers that you have accepted another position. Don’t accept additional interviews or job solicitations. Students who renege on a job offer will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Reneging is grounds for exclusion from CPT and requests for switching employers will not be considered or processed.

Academic Integrity Policy

Any student who has a sanctioned academic integrity violation is NOT eligible for counting the internship experience in their iPOS.  Also, students found to be misrepresenting circumstances regarding employment or knowingly misleading faculty and staff regarding employment will have not have their CPT paperwork processed.
