Dynamic frameworks represent an unusual aspect of the solid state (1). The evidence (2,3) and the understanding (4) of very large reversible breathings opened the way to possible applications. Some of them are intrinsic to the breathing mode. They will be detailed in this lecture.

After a short description of the effect itself and its structural reasons, the lecture will focus on a series of potential applications in relation with the dynamic aspects of the framework. They concern adsorption of gases (mainly H2 with its hysteretic desorption (5), and CO2 for its two steps effect (6,7)), vapours (alkanes),  but also drugs. On all these points, the structural, spectroscopic and thermodynamic informations concerning the host-guest interactions will be analyzed and the potential of MOFs in the domain of separation.

A special advantage of breathing MOFs will be presented at the end of the talk. It concerns the domain of  electrode materials (8) and the possibility to combine mixed valence in MOFs with breathing effects for a simultaneous insertion of mobile species and electrolytes within the same material for providing both electronic and ionic conductivity in MOFs.
