Transportation Systems

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University seek applicants for tenure-track/tenured faculty position in the field of transportation systems.  Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: urban transportation; the design and analysis of resilient and safe transportation networks; sustainability considerations in the land use-transport-energy-environment nexus; the application of emerging technologies in transportation; integrated transportation systems modeling and simulation; and multimodal aviation and rail systems planning to grow our efforts in the important thrust area of sustainability.

Transportation systems faculty in the Fulton Schools of Engineering are currently involved in several multidisciplinary research and teaching efforts aimed at addressing the sustainability and critical infrastructure challenges facing the profession. Faculty are engaged in the development of integrated microsimulation models of urban development patterns and transportation networks, lifecycle  analysis of the energy and environmental impacts of various modes of transportation, design of smart transportation systems that take advantage of ubiquitous mobile and cloud computing, assessment of the sustainability of the built environment, and optimization and planning of multimodal transportation systems. Close collaborations exist with faculty across the university, including the Global Institute of Sustainability, School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, North American Center for Transborder Studies, Decision Theater and WP Carey School of Business.  This search is aimed at further broadening and strengthening this interdisciplinary collaborative enterprise.

Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering or a field closely related to transportation systems. Required qualifications also include demonstrated evidence of research capability and commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank.

Faculty members are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt innovative educational practices in both graduate and undergraduate instruction, advise students and undertake service activities.

Appointment will be at the assistant, associate or full professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2013. Although the appointment may be in any of Fulton Engineering’s five schools, the successful candidate is most likely to be placed in the Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering program within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2012; if not filled, reviews will occur on the 1st and 15th of the month thereafter until the search is closed.  To apply, please submit as a single PDF file a current CV, statements describing research and teaching interests and contact information for three references to transportation.systems@asu.edu
